Palm Springs Art Museum

Spending time in sunny Southern California is a must for those who are looking for a warm weather escape to enjoy all year long. When you’re here and looking forward to infusing creative inspiration into your stay too, make sure to set aside time on the itinerary for a stop at the inviting Palm Springs Art Museum.

A Legacy of Art in the Heart of the Coachella Valley

The history of the Palm Springs Art Museum goes back to 1938 when it first opened as the Palm Springs Desert Museum at La Plaza downtown. At that time, the museum specialized in Cahuilla tribal artifacts, natural science exhibits, and programs revolving around guided hikes in the area. The popularity of the museum was swift, and the physical location changed several times over the years to accommodate growing visitor numbers.

The Museum Today

In 2005, the name of the museum was officially changed to the Palm Springs Art Museum in honor of the fact that the facility’s mission had expanded to include a focus on performing and visual arts. Today, the museum remains a top-rated place on the map for visitors and locals alike to come and enjoy browsing inspiring exhibits, participating in cultural programming, or enjoying incredible performances.

The Palm Springs Art Museum is accredited by the American Association of Museums and hosts two sculpture gardens, five storage vaults, resource centers, four classrooms, 28 galleries, a 433-seat theater, a store, a bistro, and a lecture hall that can accommodate up to 85 at a time. Beyond the main campus, the museum includes the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center which opened in 2011, and the sculpture garden in Palm Desert which opened in 2012.
