Where to Find Indian Canyons

Once you have your hiking gear on foot and in hand, you’ll find Indian Canyons located at the base of the San Jacinto Mountains. In total, Indian Canyons hosts more than 60 miles of incredible hiking trails, giving visitors plenty of options for customizing their trekking time. No matter what trails you choose to follow at Indian Canyons, you’re in for a gorgeous visual treat. The terrain here is dotted with towering palm groves and also hosts mountain-fed streams alongside impressive rock formations.

You don’t have to go more than a few miles outside of Palm Springs to find yourself in Indian Canyons which offers visitors access to not only one, but three distinct and unique canyons to discover. The Palm, Andreas, and Murray canyons are all historically relevant and iconic landmarks within the Coachella Valley and their history and wonder has earned them a place on the National Register of Historic Places.

A Culturally Relevant Destination to Discover

When you take time to visit Indian Canyons, you’ll be walking in a place that was the ancestral home of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. The canyons are still considered sacred by the tribe today while scientists and naturalists recognize the canyons for their impressive diversity when it comes to stunning plant and animal life too.

Hiking Options

If you choose to explore Palm Canyon during your trip to Indian Canyons, you’ll find a destination that’s 15 miles long and packed with opportunities to admire California Fan Palms. The footpath that takes you to the canyon is considered only moderately graded and many visitors come this way to picnic by the stream or enjoy horseback riding as well. Those who hike Andreas Canyon will find more than 150 species of plants in the area as they move along a foot trail that takes them through groves of skirted palms and rock formations. The Andras Canyon is particularly popular among bird watchers. The Murray Canyon is ideal for an easy to moderate hike and is popular with equestrians as well. There’s a recreation area to enjoy and opportunities to spot Big Horn sheep along the Murray Canyon routes.

Plan Your Visit

Entrance to Indian Canyons is $12 for adults, and $7 for students, and $6 for children ages 6 to 12. You must be over 18 to visit Indian Canyons solo and day-hike tickets are sold at the Indian Canyons Tollgate. Hikers are required to carry at least 16 oz of water into the park for every mile they plan to hike as a safety measure. Indian Canyons is open from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm October 1 through July 4 and from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays between July 5 and September 30.
